What is a Schematic Drawing?

A schematic is a simplified but accurate illustration of the layout of the water system, including those parts temporarily out of use. While providing only an indication of the scale, it is an important tool as it allows any person who is not familiar with the system to understand quickly and easily its layout, without any specialised training or experience.

A schematic is not a formal technical drawing but it shows what the system is comprised of in terms of the plant and equipment (including servicing and control valves), and any components potentially relevant to the legionella risk, including outlets, strainers and filters or parts that are out of use.

Where there are five employees or more, you must keep a record of the assessment including an up to date schematic diagram of the water systems, the precautionary measures, and the treatments.

Schematic Drawing: When Is It Necessary?

Schematics are essential for creating official documentation for a system. They serve as a clear and standardized reference for all staff, including scheme managers and hired workers, ensuring everyone knows where things are located. This helps facilitate maintenance, upgrades, and compliance verification, making it easier for everyone involved to understand the system. A well-organized schematic promotes efficiency and smooth operations for the entire team

  •  Necessary during the initial design phase of project to provide a clear visual representation of the system's layout and components

  • When significant changes are made, such as system upgrades, new installations

  • Revising a schematic is essential when errors are identified, or when it no reflects the current state of the system, ensuring team members have accurate and up-to-date information to work with
